The target audience of this particular blog is limited to middle age parents whose children are between 2 years to 8 years, other than this criteria you might not get the essence of this blog. Although the concerns mentioned in this article are not much worrying at the moment but maybe after few years it will be top line issue for our children. Overall take it lightly and think over it!
When I was a kid the hot favorite cartoon series in those days were Tom & Jerry, Pink Panther, Woody wood pecker and few more. If I remember correctly, there was a fixed time daily, 30 mins. in morning and 30 mins. in evening. Good old daysJ. With the advancement in technology and bloom of media, 60 mins. became couple of hours and finally many dedicated channels for children were launched and the transmission became nonstop.
Nice innovation! No one is against it and infact it became easier for both parents and children as they do not have to wait for a specific time, whenever they get a chance they can watch cartoons. Usually most of the cartoon series in our time were purely for entertainment purpose and educational element was not emphasized, but with the progress today’s cartoon series are multipurpose, education with entertainment. Again not a bad modernization!
As you all are aware that we haven’t contributed much in animated media yet, most of these cartoon series are either made in west or now in India, the trend of western cartoons are not much changed as compare to our time, still pure entertainment but with only one enhancement, male/female relations are now highlighted in their stories like some love affairs or dance parties etc. As a matter of fact this is now in every media from Pakistani drama serials to Hollywood/Bollywood movies and if we want to switch on our TV sets than we have to leave with this fact.
Another major contributor of animated industry is India and you know the fact that desi will be attracted with desi, so most of our children are addicted to Indian cartoon channels, “POGO” is these days a super doper hit channel among children. They are doing excellent job from their perspective as they have amalgamated their religious teachings in their cartoons, initially there were some specific series for religious teachings and when they realized that actually this idea has worked beyond their expectation they adopted this idea in other cartoon series as well.
Interesting part of these cartoon series are, they focus on one religious person, for example these days a cartoon series “Hanooman” is being watched by most of the children, they have scripted it so well that the religious teaching is done in an appealing way. They have started the story when “Hanooman” was a child and highlighted all his small small stories so well that children are getting addicted to it. I must say that this is an excellent way to teach religious events and autobiography of religious heros as you all are aware that “a picture is worth 1000 words” and what if it is a full fledge movie? Another great advancement they did is every popular cartoon series are launched in two versions, English and Urdu and we all know that no matter how good our children are in English, Urdu has its own attraction for children of our society.
The easiest answer for this concern is to stop our children from these kind of cartoons, but is this really a good solution? Let me quote one more recent example, these days a cartoon series “CHOTA BHEEM” is most popular series among children, if you want to know the popularity graph just type “CHOTA BHEEM” on Google and check out the ratings. This cartoon series is no doubt very interesting and every second child waits for it, I have really seen a 3 year old child waiting for this cartoon and child’s day is not completed without watching this cartoon, you can imagine how popular this would be. It was use to be a pure entertainment series with some of Indian culture but as soon as popularity graph rose they introduced a new character “KRISHNA” a religious personality in Hinduism, now a new version of this cartoon series is launched “CHOTA BHEEM AUR KRISHNA” and same tactics are being followed in this cartoon also, teaching the autobiography and piousness of Krishna.
On the other end our children are not so much aware of religious persons of Islam, they only know what they are taught in schools or madressas and you can understand that there’s a huge difference in both the learning system (pictorial and theoretical). I was astonished when a 5 year old child was telling me details of “Hanooman” and “Krishna” and was singing their religious song “oom”, when I asked the child to tell me name of 12 imams he was speechless.
I admit that few organizations have worked on animated movies for children describing the event of Karbala and some animated videos to teach wazu and namaz but sadly it couldn’t grab children’s attention. We need to know that children needs entertainment and you have to device a way for educational entertainment.
If not thousands, atleast there are hundreds of stories describing childhood events and small educational lessons from different prophets and Imams (a.s.), the way they use to live during their childhood, their interaction with different people of their age and elder people, stories of their sons and daughters etc. What does our child knows about it? The only source for a normal Muslim is the subject “Islamiat” taught in school and at max the madressa but again it is very difficult to build their interest as they take schools and madressas as a part of their studies and not entertainment, I don’t know whether it is permissible to make animated videos for children based on prophet’s and imam’s (a.s) stories as a complete serial in an entertaining fashion, but if this is not an option, we have to look for some alternatives else our children will remain unaware of Islamic personalities. Same as what we are today, if I take my example I don’t know much about childhood of different prophets and imams, all I know is what usually mentioned in majlis or what I have learned in madressa. That’s it! But yes my kid will know lot about other religious personality as compare to his own religion and this is only due to “LACK OF INNOVATION”.
What do you think!
a brilliant observation
ReplyDeleteWow brother from where do u come up with such ideas? Anyways … point is really good and I don’t think there is any problem in making animated movies on Islamic personalities but the problem is that we all are lazy bumps and we don’t want to do any thing innovative. Not only in this field but in every other professions we just do wat gooras have taught us and we do not come up with our own ideas
ReplyDeletei agree with your points that our kids knows much more about hinduism then islam. the idea you gave for "annimated serial in an entertaining fashion", is perfect but do you or mr mdm who said its only our laziness tihnk that, would our religion allows making cartoon or faces of imam or prophet.... do you think will these mullas allow anyone to take this step....
ReplyDeleteone would suggest that we can take characters with a bright light on the face of imam and prophet like in movies. i would like to mention you that..children are attracted towards the character by its looks first and then with its deeds... In cartoon like spiderman or batman or superman... there is a face for them even though they wear mask while in action. so first attraction is from face expression and then body language.
According to me, in todays islam (i mean which is preached to us by mullas, i don't know what it was before as the history is manuplated at every end) there is nothing known as entertainment and celebration in islam. or i would say the only way to celebrate is ibadat like any good thing pray 2 rakat namaz, eid go for prayers, any occasion salaat, i agree we should remember God in our happiness as we do in our sadness but after shukar-e-khuda then what? how to celebrate it? what did prophet muhammad do after winning the battles.. thanked god, greeted others and .......... (what else) or just this. what so ever is the answer, it proof that today's islam doesn't permit entertainment or celebration, if we do its not in today's islamic boundry.
if there is no entertainment and celebration how can we attaract our children towards the religion when the initial need of todays world is entertainment, i don't have the answer... we have thousand of aalim, and mujtahids and a mujthahid-e-alaam. who have studies far more than what i have done ... why don't they see this critical issue and comes up with an idea. hmmm i know what they will say best... avoid TV and satellite channels. they are son of shaitans... well if these pious aalim-e-din can't think about the alternative how can a small minded person like me can think about it.
instead of thinking alternative i can think why they have edge over us (muslim - shia)
1. all the gods of hindu came (born) in india, however our imams are from arab society. a south asian child can easily relate himself with the culture he is fimilar to comparitively with the one he had learnt about in books.
2. they show their religious personalities as an ordinary children who dirty their clothes in sand while playing, does some mischieves to trouble others then learn from mistake... along with some super powers to face the bad guy.
are we allow to potray any imam like this??? according to our teachings imams are masoom from birth and won't do any mischievous act to disturb any one.
3.in cartoons sometimes those religious characters do something which they have never done in real life... while showing some good deed with the theme of "our responsibilities towards society" and children can attach themself with the character. how ever if we do it even for the betterment, we shia will beat that person ke imam se jhoot mansoob kiya..
4. if the child likes any character he wants to be like him... thats why the costume of all the leading cartoons are in the market... from where we can bring costumes of imam and prophets for them. Will we support and appericiate our kids when they would says i am hussain ibe ali.. come yazid i will kill you...
according to me.. this will never change till our religious leaders open up their minds and preaches us how to live according to the real teachings of islam while competing with the present world... like even after allah's promised to give rizq we give are level best to competer for then bestest risq rather then to sitin a jungle doing ibadat waiting him to fulfills his promise.
I really appreciate that someone pointed out this as a issue and I m happy that there is atleast one person who can read my mind. I was also frustrated since last few weeks, let me share you what was running in my mind. I have 2 daughters age 4 and 6 yrs, both are badly into pogo these days the first thing in the morning when they are getting ready for school while doing breakfast and changing they want pogo to be switched on, after coming back from school while doing lunch they want pogo then again in late evening they watch pogo, I had taught them not to watch hanoman kind of cartoons and tried to stucked them to chota bheem and Mr. been etc. but since chota bheem is mixed up with Krishna I don’t want them to watch it but they are so use to of chota bheem that it is being difficult for me. Sometimes I really think how good it will be if we have similar types of cartoon series highlighting the great victories of Islamic heros but unfortunately there is not a single one like that.
ReplyDeleteIf someone take this step believe me 1000s of children will learn Islamic history easily.
I intend to write a full blog within a blog on this topic but I’ll try to be concise. Firstly I agree with the points Sabbas has mentioned but apart from our mullas intervention why is it not possible? I will try to post you a link of a video which I saw a year ago, that was a flash video made on Hadrath Abul Fazal (as), how on the day of Ashura he went to fetch water for Hadrath Sukaina (sa), the way he sat on his horse the then how the horse ran toward the river and then how Hadrath Abul Fazal (as) fought with army, this flash video was with an Arabic nasheed in background .. believe me I viewed it several times and I liked the effort made on that video.
ReplyDeleteNow lets come to the point of Sabbas, the appearance of character .. again I’ll quote that video, although face was not shown but the character of Hadrath Abul Fazal (as) was dressed up nicely with a veil on the face and at first glance it looks like a character of a true warrior.
I don’t promise but I’ll try my level best to search out that video and post the link for you all. (Inshallah)
So the conclusion is we can make this kind of animated videos without showing the face but we can dress up character nicely so kids can enjoy watching it.
hi
ReplyDeletei have two kid too ..6 yrs and 2.5 yrs and belive me i never allowed them to watch any indian channel cause kids in my relative watch cstar plus and know all the bhajans and rituals of hindus so i thought that i shuld not allow them to watch those channels but since my elder child has started going to school from thr he has learnt several hindu tact and concepts and pogo is one thing which i allowe them to watch but no more i have stopped them from watching it.....but the result is that they too come to abt all tis from other children......dear khoja shia...we all know what the problem is soo plz conme up wid solution. as a matter of fact we all love to point out the problems but none of us are intrested in finding solution to it.
This is nice thought put up here , what i have done is sacrifice my self by not watching tv channels, definately if you are not watching indian channels since your child inception, your child will also not watch the same, but yes this is not the solution , we should come up with good islamic channels but again no islamic channel can be that much entertaining that western or indian channels are?? what we can do is try and divert our children to some better things rather than these abusing channels.
ReplyDeleteagain not watching tv.... is this the solution??? why don't you ppl see the positive side of it, let them watch tv.. with this you can mark the difference b/w islam and other religion to them...
ReplyDeletei know a family... who don't allow their children to watch tv ... what they do is they insist to go to a relative place where they can watch it.. or they watch it in the absence of their parents...
"THINK" what if one day there is something worst is on tv, and if its new for them it would attract them.. and due to the strictness they can't even share it with any one. in result they start moving towards that attraction when alone, and it might end up in disaster.
also islam says do your research then adopt islam, but these days we want our children to follow our relgion by hook or by crook that we don't care.... open them to the world... tell them whats right and whats wrong... let them use their small brains.. and guide them where u think u should but stop spoon feeding.... make them ask u questions like why islam forbid this what is the concept of other religion...
we allow our children to explore the world.. then why can't we allow them to explore the religions. one should know what other religion preaches then only he can distinguish b/w good and bad religion.
for imran i would repeat my sentence that there is no entertainment in today's islam... so don't expect it from islamic channels.
i teach my children by telling them the concept of all the religions... let them express their views even if there views are wrong... i teach them than humanity is important then religion. do good to every one don't think what religion he belongs to... and ask them to have faith on one God as all the religions say that... then i tell them that we always follow good peoples... then we discuss the legends of every religion... undoubtedly prophet mohammad stood a head of everyone ... with prophet mohammad comes his companions... then we discuss that every nation has their laws written in a book.. then we discuss what every book says... we all know quran will get the edge on it...
i believe in giving them freedom but be with them in their every thought, so that they can share their thought with you.. not only in religion but in every walk of their life.
good point but i agree with above comments that these mullas will not lets us do anything innovative as every innovation is a Bidah in their opinion.
ReplyDeletei wish mullaism becomes bidah...
ReplyDeleteI am a silent reader of this website. Since many days I am observing the comments and discussion on different articles .. some of our brothers are very much against mullaism and almost in every article mullas are being criticized. According to your comments it seems like there is not a single Islamic person in Pakistan & everyone is mulla and mullas are _______ and ______. I think you want a person who wears old and torn cloths, lives in 1 room house in some remote area, just eat a piece of bread with water one time a day and lives a below average life then if he teaches islam you will call him a religious/pious person.
ReplyDeleteBut I can bet if you find that kind of person then also you will criticize that one piece of bread also that why it is not half. First make few points clear in your mind.
Firstly do you need some religious teacher at all or you are sensible enough to guide yourself and you don’t need any one?
If you need one then do you want a tailor made person which acts upon your wish?
Are you looking for a priest who is cut off from the society and remains in mosque every time, no family no social circle?
One question to all those who are actively criticizing mullas. Is there any religious person in Pakistan you are satisfied with??? Please name it.
hehehehhehehe
ReplyDeletesatisfying pakistani mulla...
on google: No results found for "satisfying pakistani mulla"..
on bing: We did not find any results for "satisfying pakistani mulla".
if search engines like google and bing can't find one.. how can i ...
by the way my defination of religious/pious person, is not what you protrait... its just that what ever he preaches, he follows it too.. not like today's mulla's and allamas..
i don't care if he have family, and social circle... if he is going to a party of na-mehram, he better not preach parda to us.
i don't care he forbid his parents, just don't speak on parents haqooq in front of public.
i don't care he lives in a two storey banglow or a room flat.. i don't want him to use my money of khumus for his levish life.
i don't care he eats full stomach or waste food, just don't preach me to think for poor before eating.
i just want some one who preaches what he does... name me one person in pakistan.
hi there
ReplyDeleteagar mulla party permission dae bhi daiti hai ... tou kia shioun mai itna dam hai kai woh koi aaisi cheez bana lain.....aik nambar kai dhaelouuu aur lullll loug hain hum saaalae sab k sab excuses dhoundtae hain kai kiss tarha kaam sae bachain. Sareee cheezeen mullon per rakh ker khood chooot jatay hain, agar itna hi innovation lani hai tu "Payam" aur "Wilayah network" jaise kisi organization ke saath mil ker kyon koi animated movies aur bachoon ke liye achi series nahi banai ja sakti hai.
Sub ke sub sirf bateen kerna jantay hai, agar itne hi hamdardi hai tu jaoo keroo contact in organizations se... huh
my children were also very much passionate for these cartoon series but now a days I am trying to divert their attention towards other series like Barbie or Stuart little etc. I am also fed up of this Hindu mythological cartoons.
ReplyDeletedear brothers,
ReplyDeletei was reading articles and comments on this website and i liked the entire concept of discussion. all of us have few misunderstandings and its good that we can share our views.
