Disgraceful Incident

Few weeks back I had updated a blog regarding sports activity in our Khoja Community and to my surprise people showed tremendous interest in it, I received several emails for appreciation and people sent me their details to contact them once such activity begins. As I was compiling the list to put it in some shape and start making arrangements for some sporting activity under any of my short-listed organization’s umbrella, I got to know that already a group of people have started working on same direction and the good news was that they had already made required arrangements to organize a full fledge sporting event. I was more than happy to know this news and instead of organizing a separate event, I emailed all interested candidates and provided them the information about that group and suggested them to participate in that event in large numbers.

Most of you know the details about that sporting event and what happened in the closing ceremony. For those who are still unaware let me brief you that how we added one more BLACK feather in our community’s cap.

I will not go into any details of such kind that who was correct and who was wrong nor I will mention names of any group as I did not witnessed that very moment but whatsoever the case was, the overall picture was not good and did not portrayed good image of our community.

Story begins with an organization that stepped up and arranged an inter community cricket tournament, open invitations were sent to all community members to submit their teams. People warmly welcomed the idea and good number of teams were registered. A professional venue was decided and all possible professional arrangements were made for the tournament. Event started with great excitement and was commencing quite successfully and then two top teams were selected for finals.

Many respected community members, members of managing committee and few of non community guests were invited for the final match followed by the closing ceremony, everything was set to ideal condition, large numbers of spectators were present in the stadium and the match started with great enthusiasm. At one point match umpire made a decision which was opposed by one team and then the argument started between both teams and umpire, soon the argument turned up into a dispute and finally the supporters also got involved and then very thing became a great mess. Abusive language and physical strikes destroyed the entire environment and at last the match was discontinued. You can easily imagine about the closing ceremony which was arranged after the match.

As I had already mentioned that I did not witnessed that specific moment which was the root of all dispute so I cannot comment on it and ofcourse there is high chance that the umpire made wrong decision, whatever was the case, was this correct way to react? Is this called sports man spirit? Is it professionalism?

As a normal community member I was very disappointed with all that happened, we are not united on a sporting platform which was at the end a game, how do we expect community members to be united on other platforms which are more serious than a game?

After this incident I was very discouraged and seriously I thanked Allah that it was not me who arranged this event, I highly doubt that any organization will now step up to organize these kind of sporting or any other events.

Let’s hope for the best and pray to Allah on our condition! Do prayers work when people themselves don’t want to change?

  1. Assalam o Alykum,
    Dear KSIA,
First of all i would like to appreciate you on writing this blog and not taking any one side.
I was there who witnessed the whole incident, i will only say that teams who did opposed the umpire decision should have acted sensibly and should have taken other way of protest and match should have been completed.
    Regards.

  2. No body has the right to use the name of followers of isna asheri imams a.s. The time for the event was the 'shabe juma' 9.30pm the night of prayers and not plays. this event was organized by a aalim of khoja shia isna asheri jamaat karachi and it was held on 'shabe juma' hence approving loose time in this sacred night as against declaration of isna asheri imams a.s.

  6. I think the main reason is by nature we people are very much aggressive and this is very normal in cricket matches. There is nothing to create a fuss out of this issue. It was just a match which end up because of a fight.

    Oh my Allah!
Brother murtaza just because we are aggressive by nature can we fight anywhere? Is it an excuse?
As mentioned that the tournament was organized in a professional manner and final match was being watched by different community and non community guest, what impression would been taken from that fight?
This is not a good excuse as tomorrow we will start using weapons and put the same excuse that we are actually aggressive.
Not good! We have to admit that whatever happened was wrong and is a serious point of consideration for all of us.
    wsalam

  8. i agree with br. raza hussain, we should not give lame excuses and accept our mistakes.
watever happened in that cricket match is an eye opener for all khoja members and interesting thing is very next day i got a hand bill in which allegations were mentioned against the organizers and umpires and i got to know that umpires were non community people who were being paid for their services.

  13. Dear Anonymous(s),

I can understand your feelings, if you are supporting one team and you find unjustice then the reaction is natural. But I would say that using offensive language and physically hurting the culprit is not a good way to show ur feelings, it would spoil ur image and the culprit person will not be exposed infront of general ppl like us. You shld have protest in some other manner by recording your complains in jamaat and to the organizers of this event. If they are not hearing you than you can bring some neutral respected person in between.

    ReplyDelete
  14. am not supporting single team,
i have seen the umpire's decision in every match.. he favoured GIYF all the time. everyone else has noticed the same too.
i can't see any possibility of GIYF coming in the final w/o being favoured by mr. zaki (the umpire).

but as per rules, umpire's decision was final. no body was allowed to challenged it.

how can you register any complains against him when the organizer were supporting the decision, which were in their favour.

second the umpire was not hit by any team member, it was the supporters who did this, and i salute them for doing this, when rest of the community was sitting cowardly in front of the organizer as they were respectable figures in the community.

my question is that what should we do when these respectable persons of the community supports the unfair decisions. this is the only thing left for us to do.

and if you say by this our image is spoilled with this act. how can u defend the image of our community where our leaders are corrupt???

    ReplyDelete
  15. Your points are valid, I am also not supporting any team or organizer or umpire, my only point of concern is the way of showing the reaction.

Ok let’s assume for a moment that umpire was doing favoritism with one team and his decisions were incorrect, in any professional environment what should have been done? Let’s say if this match was on district, city or international level, would the supporters be able to hit the umpire? My only point is if other teams had a feeling that umpire was doing injustice they should have boycotted the tournament and at the least they should have walked away with dignity.

But after hitting and abusing the umpire no one will believe that umpire was wrong, every person will blame the other team for being harsh.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Before start of any tournament a mechanism should be set up by the organisers of such events for appeals to any challenged umpire decision - though it should be understood that umpire's decisions are final.
Also any biased umpire should not be engaged to officiate at such meets.

  17. After reading all the comments and articles , i would suggest that instead of any sports activity / tournament where we have spend ample amount of money ( Play Ground fees , Banners , Screens , arrangement for audience , decoration like seats, refreshment) which brought conflicts among the community youth and members , i would suggest that our jamaat having so much funds could 'nt establish a library in heavily populated area , where there could be no disputes and conflicts among jammaat youth but the time will be fruitful and invested rightly , i have seen literally our khoja Shia jammaat youth going to SNOOKER CLUBS , INTERNET CAFES and do some other time wasting stuff and abusive things sitting in the friends gathering adopting bad things :( just because we dont have a place where we could make our time fruitful and successful like Library and Study centre..
Its high time that our elected leaders put an eye over this critical issue instead of spending money that can't be brought back again but the library place that could be a rigid thing and can be stayed for a longlasting time and can be used by many people of all age..

    Want your comments :)

  18. library library library
    fuck off!!!
    life is to enjoy.

    what is your problem.
come out of this fucking skin of library and study center.

    listen you bloody nerd,
enjoying life is also essential then studying all the time.

going out with friends is an entertainment, playing sports is also a essential part of life and health. also relaxation is important in life.

and moron if you don't have access to community library, come out of you shell and use other libraries.

i am not against your study center, but am against your fucking thinking that study center is better the entertainment.

so cut the crap. and let others enjoy.

  21. Salaam All,

I really appreciate that our community is so much activite that this incidence create alot of questions along their solutions... I was an eye witnessed at the ground. I really appreciate all the teams and the organizers for arranging this tournament..

The latest news is that the runner up team apologized and received gifts after watching the videos which clearly showed that Umpire was corrrect. If some one is accepting the mistakes, we as a believer of 14 STARS (A.S) must also ignore and re-unite ourselves to go for something BIG ONE.

  22. That's a good news, I appreciate all the team members of runners up team.
That is called true sports man spirit.
    Welldone!

  24. Salaam Again,

With the help of Allah and 14 Masoomeen (A.S) GIYF has been selected in "ALL PAKISTAN ASGHAR ALI SHAH CRICKET TOURNAMENT (HARD BALL)". GIYF played it first match although lose that one but still 2 more matches to go... and we must appreciate them that they are playing against the best teams of Pakistan. Infact the only team representing SHIAS there.
Another good news is that, GIYF has been selected to play practice match of 20 overs against SRILANKA A at National Stadium on 14 August...

Now wat u ppl say abt this... Dont we appreciate the organizers for arranging such sort of tournaments or as one of my brother said in a comment
QUOTE " say sahi mara umpire ko,
tournament start se bemani karta tha....

rohani ko bhi ek do hath laga denay chaiyeh thae phelay se umpire ko khareed ke rakhay tha" UNQOUTE

    Your comments plz

  30. The person who was saying "say sahi mara umpire ko,rohani ko bhi ek do hath laga denay chaiyeh"

why is he so quiet now. he himself demanded for the video proof.

kehna tu nahi chahiye but i think GIFY ke opposite jo team kkheel rahi thi woh iss tournament mey shooro se hi kuch na kuch issues create ker rahi thi ... u guys know wat i m talking abt (syed banday wala).

  31. nice piece of fielding....
sahi baat hai yaar sach bolo maar parti hai

salay umpire ne pura tournament bemani ki.. kisi ne kuch nahi bola... ek baar sahi decision diya and maar pari.

but still umpire ko to sahi mara... maza agaya yaar... video dekh ke yadien taza hogayi...

  32. shame on u, loser.

    don't be possesive....
or u will be in the list with rohani.

    ReplyDelete
  33. For your information I have nothing to do with GIYF or with Mr. Rohani, but i said shame on you because of your attitude and comments. After seeing the video also you are being stubborn ... sick ppl like you have put bad name to our community.

Look at your attitude, some foundation initiated sports activity for our community and instead of supporting the effort you ppl started criticizing it. App looogoon ke attitude ko deekh ker tu kabhi koi himat nahi keray ga kisi bhi event ko organize kerne ke liye.

    ReplyDelete
  34. hmmm attitude....
galat ko galat bolo to attitude..
    wah re kya zamana agaya...
i have always appericiated the step...
the thing which i critized is umpire's unfair decisions..... after seeing the video i accepted this decision was correct.. but there were several favourable decision by the umpire.. which u should not deny and this is the reason is said sahi mara... and i said this ke rohani ko marna chaiyeh tha cuz he was witnessing it but remain quiet. they baad mein majlis mein adal or adalat ki batien kartay hai aur khud ............

according to you am sick person and have put bad name to community. my dear if leaders of our community are !@#$%^&* then there is no space i can contribute in spoiling its name.

waise because of healthy persons like you in the community we are progressing towards downfall, you people are always quiet when they have to stand against any unfair, unlawful or unethical issues and if someone says anything u ask them to be quiet. u ppl just support the people who are ruling u and ur mind.

am happy to be sick in ur healthy world... atleast i can express what i feel, so what u name it attitude... who cares.. :P
